The Kimberley and El Questro

Without a doubt, my number one bucket list dream travel destination is Western Australia’s Kimberley region, in particular El Questro Wilderness Park. I fell in love with the images of this region when I was doing a school project in high school and to this day every time I see anything to do with the Kimberley or El Questro I get a severe case of itchy feet and start dreaming of how and when I can get Trev and the kids over to W.A. for an adventure.

Everything about the place gets my heart pumping. The amazing sandstone ranges, the magnificent waterfalls, the beautiful green of the grasslands… everything! I can’t even look at the orange ‘ELQ Australia’ sign without going weak at the knees (I know, i’m probably not quite right in the head), this place has a serious affect on me

Something for everybody

You may think being in the middle of nowhere might leave you with nothing to do but laze about watching the birds, well this can’t be further from the truth. The best thing about the El Questro Wilderness Park is you can be as animated as you wish. You can try your hand at barramundi fishing, go on a horse trek (yes, please) or a hike through the variety of different trails. Or you can do what I plan on doing and that is seeing the place from up high and go on one of the world’s most stunning helicopter flights. My dream is to see the Cockburn Range from the air(ahhhmazing!)… or you can always just chill out and watch those birds.

Everything is catered for

Accommodation is provided in the form of air-conditioned bungalow and camping at ‘The Station’, tented cabins at ‘Emma Gorge Resort’ or go all out and luxe it up at ‘The Homestead’ in 5 stars. You can also bring along a caravan but they recommend only off road vans due to the conditions of the area. The wilderness park has everything you need with a bar, cafe, restaurant, fuel supply, gas bottle refills and best of all WIFI!

You only live once

My fascination continued with the release in 2008 of Baz Luhrmann’s Australia with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. In case you didn’t know, parts of it was filmed in the East Kimberley region. You will see the beautiful Cockburn ranges, King George Falls and Purnululu National Park throughout the film.

Each year Trev and I have attempted to make the trip to the other side of Australia to enjoy this amazing region but like most people, get busy with our business commitments and life in general. I admit the thought of a 2 year old and a hyperactive 6 year old on a long flight does send chills down my spine also, but I think it’s time to throw caution to the wind and go for it. It’s just a place too magical not to explore.

If like me, you have fallen head over heels in love with El Questro, why not check out their website or give them a call on T 1300 731 551 (within Australia) | T +61 2 9538 0751 (outside Australia). I’m sure it will be the best decision you’ve made in a long time.
